Lovely story Patricia – Congratulations !

My grandfather used to bottle milk from the farm and then sell it round Wicklow. Really sorry I never kept any of the glass bottles …and the round cardboard tops which were pushed into the neck.

Later he sent the milk to HP dairies in Dublin and I still remember him taking me to see the dairies – opposite where Nutgrove Shopping Centre now is

Look forward to seeing you soon in Wexford

Its wonderful the way the glass milk bottle evokes such memories. The milk theme in the story worked to link Limerick, Dublin and Mayo through Heinrich Boll who was fascinated by the milk bottles when he visited Limerick in the 1950s and, of course, had his cottage in Achill. A certain person close to me speaks with little affection of the family’s early-morning milk round in Dublin.
